Practising what we Preach
In KOnnect, we should be aiming to be exemplars regarding the organization, search and retrieval of KOnnect content. As Jan Wyllie has suggested, each KOmmunity needs to evolve its own metalanguage consisting of a faceted classification with a standard syntax. Jan has proposed such a standard syntax as a starting point.
The vision is that each post or page in KOnnect will have one or more categories assigned to it by the Author. If a suitable category does not exist, the Author can create one. In WordPress, categories can be organized into a hierarchical structure. The way such a hierarchical structure evolves through discussion among KOmmunity members is itself part of KOnnect content.
Faceted Search in KOnnect
In KOnnect, you can use categories in a faceted search in either of two ways:
- Via the CATEGORIES widgets in the right side-bar
- Via a Boolean search in the Search box
Two CATEGORY widgets are currently offered. There could be more if needed. To search on two facet values, select the first facet value from one widget and the second facet value from the other. KOnnect will return results where items have been categorized with BOTH of the values you specified.
To search on two facet values, type the first facet value, the operator ‘&’ or ‘+’, followed by the second facet value. KOnnect will return results where items have been categorized with BOTH of the values you specified.
