KOnnect is always pleased to hear of real-world examples of hitherto separate communities awakening to the fact that they have much in common. In a recently-published book, the authors make a strong case for co-ordinating the management of organizational metadata – both ‘technical metadata’ and ‘business metadata’ – as if both matter (which of course they do).
Technical metadata tend to be designed to describe data elements and their representation in the columns and tables of databases, and as such are for the computer’s benefit. Business metadata are the labels and other descriptive conventions aimed more at human interpretation, such as field names on a screen form for data entry or display, document names and types, an image description, tag or subject term.
